Recognizing the need for sewer service, Douglass Township (Montgomery County) and Colebrookdale Township (Berks County) began planning for construction of a wastewater collection and treatment facility as early as 1957.  On November 3, 1961, BMMA was incorporated.  The original sewer system, completed in 1964, consisted of 2 sewage treatment plants (Morysville and West Swamp Creek), 2 separate collection systems and 1 pumping station.

Over the years the sewer system has been expanded and upgraded in response to the growth of new developments.  The expansion included acquiring the Bechtelsville Borough collection system in 1988, constructing a pumping station and collection lines to service the Sassamansville community in 2007 and the addition of 7 pumping stations and numerous collection lines for new developments.  Several upgrades have occurred at both sewage treatment plants with the most recent upgrade at West Swamp Creek in 2016.

Today BMMA owns and operates a sewer system consisting of 2 sewage treatment plants, 9 pumping stations and approximately 90 miles of collection lines servicing over 4,700 customers.
